- Celebrate Love, Booklovers!
This month we are celebrating love with sweet Valentine's Day cards by Laughing
Elephant: individual greeting cards for that special someone and packs of 15
for lucky folks with many special someones.
We have an assortment of Laughing Elephant Journals/Notebooks, lined and
unlined, nicely priced between $3.95 and $9.95. They feature beautiful
French designs and have names like Cahier Papier Superieur printed on them, so
they house your writing quite elegantly.
We're also carrying Darling & Company's Valentine Postcard Book and French
Posters Postcard Book, romantic and inspiring.
But wait! There's more: Add a little romance & light up your night with Veris
Candles: Soy candles with natural fragrances (try Lavender Honey!) which are
perfect for sparking the mood or enhancing your bubble-bath reading. Don't ever feel
guilty for reading in the tub, booklovers!
Show some love this month by doing as the Italians do: give books to your
Valentine... And make sure to treat yourself too.
- And now for something completely different: Our book of the month is the 3rd work by critically acclaimed author Ryan Boudinot (who also worked with Kris at Orca
Books in Olympia,WA back in the mid-90's day - a natural raconteur and master of the dramatic pause, i.e. great coworker!) Blueprints of the Afterlife is
set in a time after the end of the world (the world a distant, distorted memory called the Age of F***ed Up Shit.") The Boston Globe and The New York Times Book
Review corroborate Kris's good opinion, so catch this rising star on the way up!
- We just got in a brand new spinny rack of Dover Thrift edition classics. These
li'l books are unabridged editions of powerhouses of literature. We carry over
55 new titles, including (but not limited to) Lewis Carroll's "Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland" and "Jabberwocky and Other Poems;" autobiographies by
Frederick Douglass, Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller; philosophy greats by
Nietzsche and Thoreau; literary giants by Shelley, Tolstoy, Proust and Wilde...
not to mention Lao Tze, Machiavelli, Thomas Paine ... and more! And the coolest
part is, most of the books are under $3.50. And the ones that are a bit pricier
have a lot more pages. As Samuel Butler said (and it still rings true), "The
oldest books are still only just out to those who have not read them."
- We special order NEW books every week, and we can ship books to the folks you love too.
- We have the best selection of Putumayo CDs in town, vintage postcards, collectible vinyl record albums, ephemera you won't find anywhere else, an array of quirky and compelling magazines, oh, and BOOKS! New and used, waiting to be discovered.
- Thanks to all the people who value the printed word and the joy that a printed
book brings. We love being your neighborhood bookshop and look forward to
another great year reading with you... Happy 2012, Booklovers!
- Dawn's back! You may remember her working here on weekend mornings around six
years ago with her dog Sheba. We are so pleased to have her join our
bluestocking team again and hope you will welcome her back. Our team of Mary,
Dawn, Kris and Tom are pleased to keep the tradition alive with your
participation over the past 11 years and into the future.
- Can't decide which book(s) to buy? Too much to choose from? We sell GIFT
CERTIFICATES, available in any amount. Call, email or come on in for details.

What's TRUE:
Economy, Environment & Community are three very important words to us at
Bluestocking Books!
- Spend $100 at a local business and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend
the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.
- Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
- More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.
- Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon
footprint.
- Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less
maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.
- Local retailers are your friends and neighbors-support them and they’ll
support you.
- Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national
chains.
- More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique
community.
We cannot simply love our friendly little shops and bookstores, we must also
purchase things in them. Money does not make the world go around: it creates
stability by paying employees, landlords & vendors.
Now is the time to stand up and make sure that corporations don't become the
only mirror that reflect our society.
What's Getting OLD
Our favorite independent businesses closing! We have lost a LOT of comrades in
the book trade as well as restaurants, stationers, clothing & shoe stores in
the last few years. ARG! Comments from these colleagues reveal that "people
aren't coming in as often", or are "shopping online more." If you are going to
be one of those people that will be mad or cry if/when Bluestocking Books ever
has to close or move, we ask that you please get on our email list (or
Bluestocking Books Facebook fan page) and be informed instead of unpleasantly
surprised.
Until then we will send brief, cheerful accounts of specials and hours changes;
perhaps a quote or book review. If we ever have to make any Big Change, this is
how we will notify and ask our community for help. We don't expect anything to
happen, but we don't have total control over it. As my last client just
spontaneously said, "If we lose our local bookstores, we mess a lot of things
up. I need the aesthetic to be able to come in and be surrounded by books."
What's OLD
This street address has held a bookshop for over 48 years. Many of our
customers remember Otento Books, Robert & Barbara Gelink, and Joe & crew of
Joseph Tabler Books. This hundred year old building seems to love books. Our
Bluestocking dream team of Kris, Dawn, Mary & Tom strive to be as organized as
a big chain but with the eclectic quality only used bookstores have - small but
mighty in scope and personality. We love to hear big sighs of relaxed
contentment from clients.
The contentment of reading has been going on for centuries. The sublime
pleasure power connection gift realization fascination knowledge inspiration
laughter compassion that a book can convey sets it apart from a mere object. It
takes your brain for a walk. That's why we think it's so important to attempt
to keep an old bookshop around. Give somebody a fresh perspective & set up a
great conversation by giving them your favorite book or magazine. Their hearts
and minds will thank you!
